About Me

Hi, I'm Georgie Johnson, a final graduate from Bath Spa University

During the global pandemic, I became really inspired by the mass increase of people exploring new/ alternative ways of sustainable reselling via the power of social media. I believe this is something that should be praised, developed upon and explored in a more bespoke, high end collection.

As a designer in this developing, modern day society, I work hard at creating an impactful message about current day issues, which is expressed in my ethics and approach to design. I want this to be apparent to everyone, whether they are a part of the fashion community or not. What I am communicating via my capsule collection is centred on the importance of understanding how to reduce waste within the fashion industry and the impact fast fashion is having on our world.

INSPIRATION

Social Media's 90's aesthetic meets 19th century Dickensian London.

Alongside the sustainability aspect of my collection, where I have sourced all fabrics, trims and accessories from charity shop rag piles; I then extended and developed my concept further by drawing inspiration from the growing world wide Instagram ‘Egirl, Eboy, Eperson ’ subculture. This is a modern day take on Goth but with a grunge, feminine twist.

This has then been integrated to form structured silhouettes that were influenced by my research around the late Dickensian outcast children of the London streets circa, 1840’s. In reference to their style of hand me downs and up-cycled garments, I have drawn inspiration from specific detailing and tailoring techniques.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

up-cycling

Keeping original details from second hand clothes and incorporating them in care free and random placement within the new designs. Key motifs, which have created a distinct design signature throughout this collection, include bold colours, irregular layering and strong use of collage. I have also kept a slight hand crafted feel to the collection as I believe it encapsulates the mood and aesthetic of my initial research.
