About Me

Hi, My name is Hannah Jones and I am a Leeds Arts University graduate.

Hannah was inspired by her lifelong fascination with mermaids. Her designs all focus on stripping fashion of the complex societal layers of gender. Her work is mainly focused on design and pinpointing issues and ideology’s in which she wished to erase.

After discovering my own gender identity in 2016, I went through and analysed my early life to try and pinpoint any markers from my history that would suggest a gender-variant future. The only topic that popped up in every memory was a deep affiliation and fascination with mermaids. After researching this topic I found out that many trans people have a deep connection with the mythology of mermaids, which inspired me to create this concept.

INSPIRATION

"How does the mythology of mermaids link to the transgender experience?"

The Initial inspiration that inspired the collection was presented as a dissertation presenting and exploring the hypothesis: “How does the mythology of mermaids link to the queer and transgender experience?”. The dissertation explored the key features, such as themes and characters, from present-day media as well as historical references to further the connection between the mythology of mermaids and the transgender experience.

One of my main goals for this collection was to open the conversation on breaking the gender boundary, this was solely to create a safe space for gender-variant people to be able to see themselves reflected in some form as well as possibly being the bridge to helping them find their full identity. There is an analogy in my designs that transition in many forms, not only physically but also metaphorically. The collection is presented and designed to not fall under any constrict of gender or environment.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Full Garment View

To create the fishy oceanic effect, I used a range of iridescent fabric, layered with transparent matte fabrics, As well as hand stitched pleats and layered box pleat ruffles. Combined, this created a naturalistic look as well as keeping the slight mystical feel with the iridescent glimpses of colour.

My hope for this collection is to create change in the queer fashion world and for this change to transition into the non-queer fashion world, thus opening the conversation on gender variance.
