Lydia Lower, a fashion graduate from Arts University Bournemouth

Lydia was inspired by the beauty of Cornwall’s landscape, particularly the ruins of Cornish Tin Mines and the stories they provide. A textile heavy collection the intentional distressing of fabrics exhibits the strenuous work these families would’ve once had to endure. muddy colours and stained prints, with glistening metallics for the urban woman.

Through my collection, I aim to empower the modern woman with silhouettes inspired by traditional miners clothing including oversized and masculine styles. “This collection is a historic and compassionate study into the key Cornish Tin Mining period dated from 1700 – 1914 as this was one of the wonders of the industrial world and it has stamped its mark indelibly on Cornish people, however the revolutionary strikes and devastation from the mines closing permanently are a focal point in this eclectic research.”

INSPIRATION

My inspiration for this collection started from my home town of Cornwall.

on almost every costal walk in Cornwall, you will always encounter the ruins of a Tin Mine. I often find a lot of beauty in these ruins and every mine is slightly different with hundreds of stories from the traditional miners that will be passed down through decades, therefore I wanted to convey these stories through my collection.

I am also inspired by the metals that were once mined and elements of this are conveyed through my collection with hints through metallic threads and rust dying on garments. The knit pieces all have subtle details of metallic lurex to add sophistication to the baggier silhouettes.

Prints inspired by the stories of the traditional miners.

The majority of my textile prints have been inspired by poems by James Crowden. These poems describe how it was to work in the mines at the time. Other textile details include the metallic printing to represent the metals mined and the rust dye, as well as knits based on the drawings from primary images of the mine ruins.
