About Me

Hi, I'm Abbie, A Fashion Design graduate from UCLan

My collection 'Reclaimed Romance' is close to my heart because I was heavy inspired by my grandmother. She moved to the UK from Italy in the 1950s and was being ahead of her time by reusing and repurposing garments. This collection is filled with bright colours and exaggerated elements which I know she'd love.

I was inspired by classic British brands such as Morris and Co and Laura Ashley reinventing themselves and using their archives for inspiration for their future collections. After looking into interior design and taking inspiration from my Nonna, I wanted my collection to include floral prints and bright colours. I wrote my dissertation on the fashion industry and the environment, so I wanted my collection to be as sustainable as possible, which is why the fabrics I'll use will be cotton and organic where possible.

INSPIRATION

Inspiration was taken from interior design, vintage British brands and my family.

After completing my dissertation on how the fashion industry impacts people and the environment and being inspired by my grandmother being sustainable, I wanted to use offcuts and dead stock fabrics. I came across liberty offcuts which lead me to create my collection in liberty fabrics. researching into classic British brands like Laura Ashley using archived prints for current and future collections using liberty fabrics fit perfectly with my concept as it's a Quintessentially British brand.

I was inspired by vintage silhouettes and designers such as Paul and Joe, and SaraWong to create exaggerated sleeves and interior design encouraged me to use asymmetry in my designs. I wanted my collection to also embody my Nonna's personality of being bold and courageous, which is why I chose vibrant colours and clashing print.

DETAIL

Contrast binding and finishes

When designing the finishes can make or break a garment. I believe the details are just as important, which is why I created contrast binding for my piece which matched perfectly for each garment. the dresses with belts are also matching to the garment. the pop of green tulle on the shoulders ties in with the green underskirt and adding green into my print draws attention to the shoulder tulle green. For this collection I created a black floral print on white poplin, I first create the print on white fabric using a dry paintbrush and acrylic paint and it gave a great contemporary print inspired by family photos. I wanted to create a repeat print, so I explored my options on photoshop and illustrator to create my final print.
