About Me

Hi, I'm Alice, a Fashion Design graduate from Falmouth University.

Alice’s work primarily focuses on people and their individual stories, creating a real sense of place and exploring narrative, relationships, and memories. She weaves stories and meaning into her designs to create connections and attachments between the wearer and the garments, encouraging a more sustainable attitude towards our clothing.

As a designer I create luxury, classic, elegant womenswear with exquisite fabrics and construction details. My choice of fabrics is especially important in my design process, as I seek to create a perfect harmony of textures and colours. I aim to appeal to the tactility of the wearer, instilling a sense of wonder and excitement. I particularly enjoy pattern cutting and have an interest in fashion buying, as well as design.

INSPIRATION

I was inspired by an extraordinary discovery made when looking through some old family photo albums.

On a rainy summers day, I unearthed a variety of photos taken of my Victorian ancestors living in Bombay in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Fascinated by these photos, they formed the basis of my final collection. Through examining these photos and cherished possessions kept as memoirs, this collection, 'Jean, Archie, and George, with love from Bombay', investigates the children’s experiences growing up in India during the British Raj, exploring the close relationships formed and a sense of dual identity.

In my research I sought to fully depict Bombay in this time period, spanning from the Indo-Saracenic architecture and the Bombay bazaars, to Victorian fashion and the design principles of the Sari. I was especially interested in the Indian 'Ayah' in two of the photos, exploring what sort of relationship the children might have had with her. My great-grandfather certainly had a great affinity with India, vowing to return after being sent to England for an education and keeping it close to his heart.
