I have created an alternative, contemporary, lingerie collection. Designed to be seen, not hidden. My work reflects values that are close to my heart, including inspiration from the kink and fetish communities. I use my passion for photography and graphic design to compile a unified body of work that represents me as a designer and creative.
My design process is intertwined alongside my passion for research, regarding fashion culture and social issues. My ability to create a concise and original project concept is captured within my creative sampling, and freedom with experimentation. All embodied through my ethereal illustration style, photography, and experimental publication creation.
INSPIRATION
I have a deep connection and understanding of these communities. Both past and present they have created safe spaces of acceptance and freedom expression. Providing great value to those marginalised by society. We owe a lot to these communities and their influence on fashion through history. It is important to remember where these influences came from.
I expanded upon this to investigate the concept of sin, with reference to Christian teachings and parables. Leading me to investigate medieval style torture devices, used as religious punishment for sin and deviant behaviour. Similarities seen today within some BDSM practices, coming full circle. This created the birth of my lingerie range ‘WHORE OF BABYLON’.
DETAIL
Consisting of three underwear sets, each of a different material. Alongside a full mesh, screen printed, bodysuit. The sets are designed to be worn over the bodysuit, or however the customer desires. My use of print enhances the links to initial research stimuli. My prints derived from primary study of bondage practice, as well as abstracts from The Book of Revelations parable of Babylon the Great. Babylon the Great or the Whore of Babylon inspired my project significantly. Symbolically a powerful, female figure representing evil and sin. Within my collection I wanted to embody this, creating pieces that brought people power through dress and sexual expression. Alongside my lingerie product line, I additionally expanded upon my research of the kink community, creating a zine ‘Weeping Gimp’. Using my own photography, interviews, and secondary research. Aiming to show a vulnerable and raw side to the community shifting society’s stereotypical views.
