About Me

Hi, I'm Alice Whalley, a contemporary Menswear designer

Alice Whalley is a designer who specialises in critical thinking within the design process. Her keen interest to incorporate theory to communicate the human condition within her work. A passion for learning paired with her creative ability results in a deconstructed contemporary collection.

With a background in Fine Art, the progression into fashion design was a big change, the importance of a concept to carry through the project was essential. Experimenting with knit was especially compelling as it gave the opportunity to develop ideas in a dynamic way. My fathers career in the British Army fuels a lot of my design aesthetic, military styles can be seen throughout my work and design direction. The conceptualisation of the pitfalls and triumphs of space expansion.

INSPIRATION

The conceptualisation of the pitfalls and triumphs of space expansion.

In a reflection of the human condition I considered the inevitably of organised community and conformity. With current affairs of billionaires in space, I felt as though space tourism was closer to reality than we think. My ideas parallel the excitement of momentum in these huge progressions for humankind and also the destructive nature of the pursuit of knowledge. Space is so fascinating that the media is overflowing in pop-cultural references that I heavily researched in film, art and comics.

The use of deconstructed elements, dynamic ropes, knit and military styles throughout the collection gives a contiguity between authority and and humanity and one cannot function without the other. I focused on recognisable garments with a twist to place personality within fabrication and metallic details.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Familiar Garments with a deconstructed edge

I designed classic garments as I wanted to build a sense of familiarity with a unique edge. I used deconstructed elements to represent a future dystopia. I used my dads army garments as inspiration for my design aesthetic as the military style reflects my project concept. I used dynamic ropes and long knit which give a sense of movement and illusion of imperfection. My work has a darker colour palette and metallic details to give motifs throughout the collection.
