About Me

Hi,I'm Andrea. A makeup & hair designer from Solent University.

Born in Malaysia, I see myself as an international designer who uses make-up as a tool to express and subvert traditional ideals of beauty. The freedom to experiment with ideas and play has allowed me to develop a design palette that utilizes memory, culture, experience and imagination.

As a result, I couldn't give a single definition for my designs, as they are always developing, always different. As a designer, I focus on inclusivity as there are so many pre-conceived stereotypes and I wouldn't fit into having a specific target market as far as my design style is concerned. Evidently, culture is important to me because where I come from, it's everything. It is important to access culture by telling stories through design ideas that are irresistible. Ultimately I have learned that anything is possible-to turn raw ideas into something tangible and to innovate existing ideas.

INSPIRATION

D-unconventional

Growing up as an Asian, beauty standards are always very high and sometimes unachievable. Some girls in my country would invest a lot in their faces and change how the way they look. However, in the western culture, beauty is very liberal and I think that Asians should be liberal from all the toxic beauty standards that were set in public. Therefore, this has given me the inspiration to create unconventional beauty.

Being flawless or being perfect is always the beauty ideal of an Asian. However, there is no perfection in beauty and beauty does not have to be flawless as we are all fearfully and beautifully made.

DETAIL

Have the guts to go beyond yourself

While I was creating my final major project , I learned alot throughout that entire process to attempt the looks that I visioned on Asian models. I felt overwhelmed throughout the entire process because finding the right direction to do it was very hard. But in the end, I was happy that I found a direction and decided to have the guts to go beyond myself. In future, I hope that I can work in Fashion shows, working with celebrities, photoshoots or even in magazines. Moreover,I want to have the guts to go beyond myself and create something unconventional. The beauty industry is competitive and always changing in a very fast pace, but I have the faith to go far in this journey because dreams always come true as long as you believe. Lastly, the most important thing is to be passion ,hardworking and persistant in what you do because that way you are able to get far.
