About Me

Hey I am Anjola, a fashion design student at UClan.

My inspiration has always come from my culture I love the unique perspective I have being from Nigeria and being about to draw from my heritage. My focus in in women’s wear and finding new ways to make patterns inspirated by cultures all over Africa and not just Nigeria.

I love playing with bright and beautiful colours to see what I can create, I have done hand painting, digital print making, applique amongst other techniques to create a modern yet traditional take on prints like Ankara. Additionally, when it comes to silhouette, I love being experimental and although I can design in the traditional sense by CAD I love working on a stand in 3D to create sculptural, silhouette.

INSPIRATION

Inspiration for ‘Round my Motherland’ collection, came from traditional Ankara fabric.

“Round my motherland” is the name of my collection Inspired by traditional Ankara. Looking into my personal Nigerian culture I designed garments with an ‘Afrofuturistic’ 3D, circular, sculptural, silhouette. I chose to design with circles specifically because it holds such significant meaning in almost every African culture including Nigeria, circles represent oneness, unity, the divine and so much more.

I added hand-painted patterns that mimicked the original Ankara fabrics using different scales in beautiful bright colours, the process of making Ankara is very much imperfect and no two are made the same, the process in which Ankara is made means any mistakes or imperfections must be embraced, which is the same thing embraced when I painted my patterns.

DETAIL

Fully painted garment

All my garments have an aspect of hand painting, but it was important for me to have a garment that was fully hand painted because it made me feel more connect to the to the root of Ankara making.

“I don't follow trends; I’m inspired by the world.” Duro Olowu.
