About Me

Hi, I'm Annisa, a fashion & textile design graduate from Portsmouth

Annisa Slater is a visionary Fashion & Textile Designer with a deep-rooted passion for Indonesian culture. Bringing together traditional motifs and modern aesthetics, creating a harmonious fusion that captivates the senses, through her creative vision her keen eye for detail.

My journey in fashion design began at university, where I discovered my passion for wanting to blend my art into tactile designs. I have cultivated a versatile skill set that encompasses various areas, including garment construction, print and textile design, illustration, and CAD skills. Immersed in a world of colours and patterns, to hone my skills from an A Level fine artist and photographer, to finding my voice as a designer.

INSPIRATION

Heritage journey

IndoGlish is a collection that is helping me focus on finding and accepting my second home, Indonesia, reminiscing my time with family, having the food and experiencing the culture without having fully realising it as a child. Each garment is part of a process of me coming to terms with the fact that I am mixed race but nevertheless English born and England will forever be my primary home.

I've been wanting to try and incorporate English textiles (check) with Indonesian textiles (batik) for the longest time but with a primary focus on the traditional Indonesian garment - Kebaya made with using authentic Javanese batik. The colours are tastefully bright so that the collection can remind me synesthetically of the flavours of an ice-cream I often had during my family visits in Jakarta.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

The IndoGlish way to Batik

Throughout my work I have tried to incorporate batik in my work as a check print, using other ways such as decolourant. The reason being having bought pre dyed fabric I only need to remove the colour in order to get the pattern I want. And decolourant is more environmentally friendly than bleach! I also used Contrado in printing off digitally rendered hand drawn batik drawings of flowers, in my garden as it has been a place my parents chose what to plant.
