Based in the North East of England, Archie’s work focuses in on incorporation of traditional crafts and British textiles. Creating collections inspired by his love for the outdoors and vintage clothing. Archie’s work shows what a modern heritage outdoors brand can look like.
Archie has spent his life based on the North Sea coastline, exploring coves and hidden bays through his childhood. This bred a love for the natural world, and a keen interest in the lifestyles that support lives in these often cut off areas. As he grew up and began helping aid wildlife conversation on estates inland, he developed a wider appreciation for the countryside. With an eye for design and a love of vintage clothing, an opportunity arose to help archive and work along side Nigel Cabourn’s renowned collection of vintage garments this would only go on to solidify his design language.
INSPIRATION
In a time where we are seeing more destruction of our natural world through climate change, the fragility of our societies and over urbanisation, we have all found solace in our outdoor spaces. ‘BORDERLANDS’ explores the landscape around England’s border county of Northumberland and Scotland. From Archie’s previous adventures through the Scottish Highlands, Argyll and Islands. This collection explores the often overlooked natural beauty of these areas, and the rich cultural textile history they provide.
The over arching brand ‘studioBALVICAR’ is inspired by creating a new authentic connection with our outdoors. The brand looks back to the days when craft and the use of local natural materials took precedent. ‘studioBALVICAR’ reimagines military and heritage silhouettes, merging contemporary tactile hardware to create timeless garments fit for the modern outdoorsman. The brand aims to inform and inspire customers through responsible consumption and outward support for land conservation and rewilding.
