About Me

Hi, I'm Beatrice, a Fashion graduate from Nottingham Trent University.

Throughout my time at university, I have begun to specialize in womenswear, quilting, technical fabrics, and shape innovation focusing on supporting gender equality and emphasizing the beauty of the human being. My deep care for humans, society, and the world around us is at the heart of my practice and the motivation behind my work.

My Final Major Project “TOGETHER”, is a concept constructed around the perception of the female nude and how that changed over time, investigating sexual assault and the Rape Culture myths. The focus is to open up the conversation, raise awareness and empower all women, who grew up hearing that they should not walk alone at night and lived in fear of not being assaulted. I further explore the concept of femininity and the relationship between the proportions, shape, and fabrics to create a warrior-like image, of a powerful confident woman.

INSPIRATION

I took inspiration from the symbols and connotations of the female nude representation.

“Together” addresses the object of power and ownership of oneself. It questions how we can regain confidence and strength after we have been deprived of it. The collection was developed based around the design philosophy that showing skin doesn’t mean sexy and being completely covered doesn’t mean safe. In particular, I’m interested in how the concept of femininity and female beauty has changed over time from the glorification of nudity to rape culture harassment.

I draw a parallel between physical and emotional pain suggesting the conceptuality of my interpretation. The outfits complement each other by illustrating a feminine/ masculine opposition as well as a play of proportion and nakedness. In terms of innovation, I focus on shape and structure, as well as fabric choices, using transparency to send a message. My research so far allowed me to explore processes such as creative pattern-cutting, hand stitching, quilting, leather molding, and digital print.

DETAIL

Emotional Design as the future of sustainability and fashion as art

Having researched the many different approaches to design responsibility, I am working with the idea of emotional design. Due to my concept, every piece is intended to send a strong emotional and visual message, they act like art pieces on their own and create a full image together. Handcraft is at the core of the concept, as it offers the garment more value and personality. The ruffles have been handstitched in a shape inspired by the concept but the technique can be applied in multiple ways, illustrating its versatility. These aspects will persuade the owner to keep the garment longer as there would be an emotional connection between the two, therefore prolonging its life.
