Who is Billie Rose? Well I’m glad u asked, I am ground breaking, backbreaking and stage breaking (ask the Bournemouth Walkabout team). I have one mission which is to entertain the girlies, gays and theys. Anyone who cannot handle me can leave the room, that is a you problem. I am bold, unapologetic, and unafraid to be myself!
My drag is a form of my own expression, I aim to make everyone in the room feel special and beautiful (not as beautiful as me obviously) but I want to encourage everyone to fully embrace who they are and love themselves just as much as I do. I connect personally with each audience member when performing. I am not afraid to make a fool of myself, to be venerable, be stunningly beautiful and do whatever it takes to entertain a crowd (including sacrificing my knees- take that as you will!).
INSPIRATION
I really enjoyed my film units as I love telling a story through film, to make the audience feel something. My idea then started to evolve into a documentational inspired by ‘Paris is Burning’ directed by Jennie Livingston. This LGBTQ+ documentary was such a breakthrough education piece of what being queer in 1980’s New York was like. I wanted to bring these education elements into my own film.
With the current political climate in America where they are targeting LGBTQ+ people with anti drag legislations I wanted to make a documentary film that shows the joy of drag. With so much hatred and misinformation currently in the media I aim to educate people on what drag really is at its core. Furthermore, I want to show the reasons why I love drag and share the magic It can bring.
DETAIL
During making this film I have had a huge amount of personal grown and self-acceptance and now I am finally reason to live authentically as myself and as gay as I want to be. I used to be so ashamed of who I was when I came to university but now finally in my final year, I have realised my own worth and how amazing as a person I am, without sounding too cocky. Follow me on my journey into my first time in drag. As part of my FMP2 uni project I decided to take a dive into queer culture and explore drag as a form of self expression as I have always wanted to try it. My aim was to show what drag truly is, an art form of expression that spreads joy. With the current political climate its more important that ever to educate and stop the spread of mis information. And now Billie Rose has been born, i'm so excited to see what the future holds for me and my drag. Love from, Billie Rose
