About Me

Hello! I’m Bryan, I am a graduate fashion student from NUA

Bryan Griffiths is a creative aspiring costume designer who specialises in theatre and film and tv costume design. Within his work he uses the topic of the LGBTQ+ community as a focus in his creative design and research work. He has had opportunities such as working for Cad and the Dandy(Savile Row) and designing a gown for a local drag artist.

With my work I want to keep the message of the LGBTQ+ community all throughout my designs and creations. Since I am a member of the community it’s definitely a personal topic to me. When designing garments I make sure that the outfits I make are non binary and also tell a story to the wearer and the audience that view the garments.

INSPIRATION

My jumping off point for creating these garments was looking at drag culture and gender exploration.

I have personally been an admirer of drag culture and the people who take part in the art form for a very long time. The thing that caught my eye as a start for this projects beginning was the various ways that drag performers express their characters gender with makeup, garments, and also they way they move. With my garments I wanted to show the non conformity to gender and purely focus on the emoting that that the wearer gives off when moving around in the garment.

DETAIL

I designed these garments to have a lot of movement but to also claim more space.

When creating my designs, lineup, and garments I wanted each of them to mess around with body proportions and also claim the space around the garment so that area is the LGBTQ+ person’s safe space. Each of the outfits that I have made extend the proportions of the body so that this affect is achieved.

“Gender is not what people look like to other people; it is what we know ourselves to be. No one else should be able to tell you who you are; that’s for you to decide.”- Alok Vaid-Menon
