I am a Karen women, pronounced "kah-ren". I was born in Thailand and spent 6 years of my life living there. By the age of 7, my family moved to England to provide a better life for me and my siblings. Growing up in Sheffield and spending most of my life here, i didn't know how precious life was until I dug deeper into my heritage and learned the truth.
Spending most of my life in Sheffield meant that I was able to learn and experience new things. During my time in primary school, secondary and college, I had always has a passion for arts but I didn't know which directions I wanted to pursue. Then learning about my family and my heritage it felt like nothing belonged to us but ourselves. Though this I was able to embrace my culture and the traditional clothings more closely, I was able to determine what I wanted to do in life. I wanted to make clothes for my families and my people, which is why I took the direction in fashion.
INSPIRATION
The History of my people, The Karens, pronounced "Kah-ren", is unknown to many people. We are situated in the Thai- Burma border and most Karen people are farmers who cultivate "Hill-rice". We Live in Villages that are small clearings in the forest. Houses are made form entirely bamboo and thatch. The nearby streams or river may provide a place for the people to bathe, so washing, and collect drinking water. life Follows a seasonal pattern of planting and harvesting rice.
Having seen the struggles of that my people have gone through, especially my family, running away from dangers that they had to face, villages being burned to the ground and many of the people being tortured, it was hard. Many people do not know who we are or where we come from and they have not seen the struggles that my people have gone through. The inspiration behind this project is to highlight the mistreatment of my people and to explore the life that I want them to have. Happiness. Peace.Prosperity.
DETAIL
The Concept behind my project is the Four Horsemen and they are Four different beings sent by God to punish people. Trough this idea, I designed four garments. From every little details, to the colours and the type of fabric I wanted everyone of them to be different. I wanted each of my designs to have their own individuality and I wanted each of my designs to represent each one of the Four Horsemen. The Red horse. The White horse. The Black horse and the Pale Horse. The Saviour of my people. Once the garments were made, I was able to play around with the styling, mixing different designs together to create a look and this image was created.
