For the past year, I have been exploring the theme of identity through contemporary culture. My Honours project publication and portfolio portray two sides of expressionism; free-form vs. conformity.
My Honours project focused on free-form expressionism through the Scottish jazz scene, skate culture, and dancing. I documented this through interviews, visual story-telling, and digital design work. I had the pleasure of working with some amazingly talented people that continue to inspire me. In my portfolio, I explored conformity through football fan culture. I used each ‘fan’ as inspiration for my six narratives, all while reflecting back to the theme of identity. I explored both projects as a reflection of my own interests.
INSPIRATION
Music has always inspired the work I do. Being brought up with jazz and soul, I knew from a young age that I wanted to creatively express my love for music.
My publication, titled ‘Back Room Hard Jazz’, was inspired by Mark ‘Snowboy’ Cotgrove’s book, ‘From Jazz Funk & Fusion to Acid Jazz: The History of the UK Jazz Dance Scene’. Cotgrove’s book presents the rich history of jazz in Scotland and this influenced me to investigate the contemporary scene. Aside from music, I find that my ideas work best on a collaborative level with models or artists involved in the process. Working in the community is really inspiring.
DETAIL
Taking a closer look into my graphic design, I was inspired by the legendary label ‘Blue Note’. Using Estelle Caswell’s ‘Anatomy of a Blue Note album cover’, I experimented with candid photography, bold colours and a creative crop. My appreciation for Blue Note and its history, helps tie in my investigation of Scotland's history with jazz, celebrating the roots.
