About Me

Hi, I'm Carolina, a fashion design graduate from DeMontfort University

Carolina Sousa Abreu practices fashion design. Her inspiration usually comes from subjects personally related to her and that inspire her in different aspects. Her designs explore print as well as technical experimentation, looks into the creative side of designs and develop from them.

I am a designer who likes to travel inside the creative part of developing a concept and explore from it. I like to express my ideas through my drawing while designing. I enjoy experimenting with prints and colours, specially when I can give them a personal meaning. Giving more than one purpose to technical aspects on design in something I like looking at as well.

INSPIRATION

Not even the Atlantic could keep us apart is a collection based on my cultural heritage.

Being raised Portuguese and Venezuelan I wanted to celebrate my heritage. I have created a womenswear a collection of four outfits blending the traditions and costumes of Venezuela and the island of Madeira in Portugal, where I was born and raised. I challenge myself into looking at what is traditional and making it present-day. This reflects me as a person.

I decided to look into traditional garments such as cuban shirts, or guayabera shirts, liqui liqui (a traditional suit in Venezuela), joropo and folklore dance costumes and the colour palette present in both environments. I experimented with a very colourful print on the garments as well as ruffles around the silhouette.

Not even the Atlantic could keep us apart

When the time to prepare myself for the final collection arrived, I was thinking about what could represent me on my last work as a fashion design student. Nothing better than something as personal as my cultural heritage. Being able to immerse into this part of myself and looking back at what I am used to back home, the food I grew up having, the garments, the merengues and salsas my dad used to play all the time while trying to teach me how to dance. It made me very happy to feel like I was home again. It is a love story based on how not even an ocean could separate two lovers.
