Specialising in women's wear, my approach to design is mainly guided by development and application on textiles. I also aim to have a conceptual and innovative outlook in both design and technical application.
With a personal interest into fine art, I often find research into other creatives and their processes are a common subject behind my research. However I also enjoy exploring concepts that have a greater meaning or speak out against injustice.
INSPIRATION
'Agar, Agar, Agar' is a formal grunge collection, shaped by the historical lack of recognition for women in microbiology. I explored the stories Fanny Hesse, Elizabeth Bugie, and Esther Lederberg, and their unsung contributions which were misappropriated by the men around them. A message which is translated into silhouettes and an overarching rebel vibe.
For the collection I developed an agar-based bioplastic textiles, with re-generative properties made from natural materials. I integrated the bioplastic into my garments, highlighting garment features and creating a drenched aesthetic which mimics overshadowing faced by the women in microbiology. Growth inspired ruffles also sprout from seams and further interacted with agar, creating an enhanced 3D texture.
DETAIL
A tribute to Fanny Hesse, who made the initial discovery of using agar for the cultivating bacteria and microorganisms.
