About Me

Hello! I'm Danijela, a fashion graduate specialising in womenswear.

Most of my inspiration comes from my family and Serbian heritage. I use bright colours with primary focus on textiles and leather. I like to challenge myself by exploring different textiles methods to portray my Serbian culture, yet still give it an edgy twist by combining it with leather.

Coming from a country where people make things they need from scratch, rather than buying it, I want to celebrate traditional hand-made skills by making my own fabric on the weaving loom. This way I would incorporate Balkan aesthetic in combination with new trends.

INSPIRATION

Dreams don't grow up

I dedicated this collection to my parents- my biggest inspiration and motivation. Due to post-war circumstances they had to leave their homes in their early 20s and grow up over night. They couldn’t live their best life when it was the right time for it and dreams they wanted to achieve, they fulfilled in their 40s while raising 3 kids. Starting from a poor background, with a newborn baby and barely a roof above their head, to being able to send me abroad for education is really inspiring to me.

My dad has always been a rebellious man and his biggest dream in his 20s was to get a motorbike, however he only got to afford it at the age of 45. This is where use of leather is coming from, looking at his wardrobe and biker style. On the other hand, my mum is more of a traditional person and her dream was to be part of a Serbian traditional dancing group, a hobby that every girl dreamed of at that time, yet she only had a chance to join veteran group at the age of 40.

DETAIL

Embracing traditional vs rebellious...

Looking at traditional Serbian aesthetic I found out that there are repetitive geometric shapes mostly on textiles either weaved or embroidered. I applied similar shapes on leather by screen printing, drawing with posca pen and cutting leather shapes. One of the significant features of my collection is zipper fringe. Combining the traditional yarn fringe with zippers from biker jacket led to using multiple zippers hanging from different positions on my garments.
