About Me

Emily Ash: Printed Fashion & Textiles Designer

My expertise lies in print design, where I possess technical proficiency in both analogue and digital processes. However, what truly ignites my passion is applying these prints to fashion. From a young age, I’ve been drawn to sewing, dedicating nearly a decade to self-teaching, and mastering various techniques.

My goal is to achieve couture-level craftsmanship in garment construction, and I’m constantly driven to learn and refine my skills. My dedication to excellence extends to print design, where my knowledge of pattern cutting empowers my creative vision. By seamlessly integrating both skill sets, I achieve full creative freedom in my work. In my project ‘The Uncanny Valley,’ each look serves as a testament to my technical expertise and its seamless integration into my print design. I am deeply committed to pushing the boundaries of my craft and continually exploring new avenues of creativity.

INSPIRATION

The Uncanny Valley

My project explores the relationship we have, as creatives, with the sudden boom in generative AI technologies. I believe there is concern surrounding AI replacing creative individuals within the industry. through my work, I aim to reclaim this space by instead using the AI as a collaborator citing its uniquely disturbing qualities as a source of inspiration in developing my work, restoring the human element in this highly digitised space.

The title ‘The Uncanny Valley’ refers to the eeriness of AI generated imagery, highlighting the flaws in the technology. I chose to juxtapose the digital elements of my project with organic beauty, drawing inspiration from the picturesque landscapes of my home in North Yorkshire. By using real flowers in my work, I explore the interplay between the raw product of nature and new a technology that is synthetic and creates caricatures of the real world.

Specialism: Print & Design

Each look exemplifies a specialization I have refined throughout the creation of this collection. Innovative experiments with dye sublimation and silk screen printing yield intricate surface designs integrated into each garment. Draping and dramatic corsetry are utilized to sculpt the silhouettes. Look one merges pattern cutting and print ingenuity to achieve a dress with pattern-matching across all major seamlines.

Hey, I'm Emily! I specialize in printed fashion, combined with a decade of self-taught sewing, bold fashion design might just be my forte.
