About Me

Esther, a Fashion Atelier Graduate from UCA Rochester

An avid problem solver, who pairs innovation with tradition. My practice is heritage based, and I am proficient in bespoke tailoring and couture fashion. I focus on creative pattern cutting, informed by draping, and technical methods of production.

Although tailoring is about strict regimes and traditional methods, my time with Savile Row tailors introduced me to the individuality within their practice. My designing process involves fluid exploration, built on consistent 3D development. At times I like to find order in chaos, other times I embrace the chaos. Constantly quizzical, looking for new opportunities to expand upon my existing knowledge, I make functional, timeless garments.

INSPIRATION

Personal Artefact

‘Barriers and Portals’ encapsulates the constraints, abilities, and transient nature of memory. Bold, asymmetric design decisions simulate the unexpected silhouettes of land contours that are sculpted and dissolved by time. Barbara Hepworth and the Unit One group of artists inspired my sculptural method of draping and focus on dynamic seam lines and silhouettes, that create a sense of energy, movement, and emotion.

Hepworth’s ‘Pierced Forms’ informed my creative pattern cutting, focussing on seam elimination to enhance the tension between presence and absence. Having paired traditional tailoring practices with draping, the juxtaposition of controlled and liberated motifs alludes to the often-fractured nature of memories.

DETAIL

Abstract

This Collection is a fresh, playful take on traditional attire. Focus on couture finishing techniques is undertaken to increase garment longevity. Repetition of asymmetric style lines and curved jet pockets create rhythm, balance, and harmony, whilst simple lines exude clarity, elegance and function.

"One must be entirely sensitive to the structure of the material that one is handling. One must yield to it in tiny details of execution." - Barbara Hepworth
