About Me

Hi, I’m Georgina, a womenswear and knitwear graduate.

I’m a details-oriented designer who uses textiles and historical fashion reference points to create clothes that feel contemporary and playful, whilst telling a story, and preserving heritage. A personal connection to our clothes is something I aim to encourage in my work, through whimsical details such as embroidery and knit.

Ich wünsche, du wärst hier -or I wish you were here- is a playful and contemporary take on traditional German clothing, and the sense of belonging and community it fosters. Traditional ensembles influence voluminous silhouettes, whilst the craftmanship of the garments is reflected in machine embroidery and smocked knit details. The bright colours of expressionist painter Gabriele Münter’s interpretations of Bavarian landscapes influence my colour palette, bringing another facet of home and heritage into my work.

INSPIRATION

Ich wünsche, du wärst hier -I wish you were here

The varied traditional garments of Germany serve as inspiration for Ich wünsche, du wärst hier, a collection that engages in the discussion of clothing as a community, and a means of belonging, inspired by my own experience of moving abroad, and finding belonging in traditional clothing. Across all regions of Germany, people still use traditional garments as a form of self-expression, a preservation of heritage and traditional techniques, and a means of creating community.

The detailed textiles of traditional German garments are signals of anything from social class to marital status. This attention to detail, and the sense of understanding and community it provides to those in the know is reflected in my own work, with my close focus on textiles resulting in entirely unique garments and creating a feeling of connection between the wearer and the clothes, encouraging a lifetime of wear and use.

DETAIL

Knit as a reflection of tradition

Knit is a key feature in my collection, allowing me to translate long-standing textile applications from traditional German garments for a modern audience. Gapped ribs are hand sewn together in intervals to smock the knit, reflecting traditional techniques, whilst manipulating volume in the garments. The diamond shape created by the manipulation of the rib also bears resemblance to the state flag of Bavaria, the region I grew up in. A blend of yarns creates a contrast effect between the raised ribs and rear layer, further emphasizing the effect.

When I’m designing, it has to mean something to me, otherwise it’s just clothes -Simone Rocha
