About Me

Hi! I'm India (she/her), a Uni of Leeds Fashion Design graduate

Specialising in womenswear, India creates sophisticated and elegant collections. In her final year, she completed four distinct projects, showcasing versatile design skills. Her portfolio demonstrates her capabilities and experimentation with surface designs, draping techniques, and aesthetics.

One of my main projects explored my mixed heritage, designing a 16 outfit capsule collection that celebrated a marriage between Indian and English culture. By upcylcling my old sarees, using zero waste draping, I constructed 2 of these outfits - curating modern adaptations of the saree whilst honouring traditional culture and craftsmanship. Along side this I also illustrated and flat sketched three 12 outfit collections inspired by the brands Nina Ricci, Rat and Boa and Ottolinger as well as completing my independent study dissertation.

INSPIRATION

INDOWESTERN DESIGN

Growing up with dual ethnicity has meant that I have been constantly surrounded by a fusion of two wildly contrasting cultures (Indian and British). This project proudly pays homage to both sides of my heritage, marrying western and Indian fashion to create a capsule for a brand I have developed myself: Marigold. The following portfolio of work illustrates how i have developed the brand identity and designed the collection as well as showcasing the two final outfits that I constructed.

By draping these sarees in innovative ways, I have reimagined them as contemporary fashion pieces. This approach not only honours traditional craftsmanship but also embodies sustainable practices, including zero waste and circular fashion, contributing to the conversation on sustainability in fashion and fostering a future where cultural heritage is celebrated through modern, eco-conscious design.

DETAIL

STYLING AND ACCESORIES

The fashion shoot took place on a university campus, coordinated with the photography department and styled by me. I used traditional gold Indian jewellery to accentuate the gold details in the sarees weave. Bindis, minimalist makeup, and fresh flowers were incorporated to enhance the brand's aesthetic. The flowers were carefully chosen to reflect their symbolic significance in Indian culture, weaving a narrative that resonates with the cultural heritage. This thoughtful styling aimed to create a visual harmony that celebrated tradition while appealing to contemporary sensibilities.
