I am a Portuguese creative trained in Makeup and Hair Design who specialises in Avant-Garde Editorial and in SFX techniques. My work explores cultural heritage, subcultural experiences and gender expression through the lenses of speculative design.
As a designer, I see makeup and hair as a medium for the exploration of identity and the human form, so each approach to image construction feels relatable. Consequently, I have worked within a range of channels for the creative industries - from beauty brands, digital makeup for social media, SFX for theatre and film to art directing editorial fashion shoots and short films. By engaging with a variety of perspectives on beauty, I have developed a rich technical and conceptual vocabulary which allows me to translate the reality of inner experiences of the self onto the human body.
INSPIRATION
Inspired by the rebellious spirit of youth subcultures, much of my work has been conducted in collaboration with fellow artists as a way of creating powerful imagery with engaging narratives. Also inspired by my role model in the beauty industry, Isamaya Ffrench, my speculative creations take into consideration the wider cultural context in which they exist, while still putting makeup and hair at the centre of storytelling.
By finding inspiration in cultural and subcultural representations, fantasy characters in film and in the unique landscapes of fashion, my work goes beyond what is set by commercial beauty standards to show an altered yet authentic image of the self. I explore the possibilities of identity by bending the human form, in an attempt to expand how beauty is used to communicate values, emotions and experiences in society.
DETAIL
While celebrating Iberian talent and heritage, this project also tries to actively strengthen bonds within the community through collaborative work. As a collective, we put together a live performance featuring beauty, fashion, music and art inspired by the subcultures we engage with and our own heritage, with a particular focus on future possibilities for creative Iberian identities as immigrants in the UK.
