About Me

Hi I'm Jess, a womenswear graduate from Arts University Bournemouth

Jessica Horton is a womenswear designer, working within themes of identity through the process of creative pattern cutting, combining feminine and masculine silhouettes and bold graphic prints. Sustainable and ethical design is embedded in design choices as well as strong focus on transparency.

My design methodology is rooted in creative pattern cutting, specifically creating abstracted silhouettes from existing garments through drape and collage. I find my inspiration in self expression, themes of identity and womanhood and translate these ideas into wearable concepts. I am specifically interested fashion design and would love to bring my knowledge and ideas to a luxury fashion brand that has a focus on sustainability.

INSPIRATION

My collection was inspired by Astrology and Identity

Who am I? is inspired by the resurgence and popularity of Astrology in the modern west and how one might be defined by their given zodiac sign. I discovered that my zodiac sign is Cancer and not Gemini, which lead me to question identity and how we define our personalities and how they are perceived be others. Are performances synchronous or conflicting?

In response to this question, The collection explores asymmetry within garments, displaced detailing, knotting and multiwear elements, symbolising the different sides of ourselves and creating new harmonies. The collection has a strong focus on sustainability and ethics which informs fabrication, design longevity and production transparency.

DETAIL

Who Am I? is not just a graduate collection, it is a statement that sustainability is fashionable

Natural Fibres, deadstock materials and upcycling have been used with minimal plastics in final garments and waste collected for future projects. Through this I have been able to explore textile process such as knitting, dyeing and embellishing. My handsewn knitted dress is created from second-hand Aran sweaters that were marked and damaged. Taking these garments apart allowed me to not only imagine a new silhouette and new life for garments that might otherwise have been thrown away, but also appreciate them in their previous form and that stories they had formed before.

“In the end, as a creative person, it’s not about the money you make. It’s about what you want to say." - Luella Bartley
