Fashion Design to me is more than just the finished product but the journey along the way. Fashion illustration and digital designs is a personal strength of mine and I thrive on finding creative ways to showcase my ideas, later making them a reality.
Duality is the focal point of my collection of work this year as I combined my mixed heritage of Jamaican and British ancestry to enable a process of evaluation of the contrasting cultures. By doing so I created a body of work to highlight the differences and similarities of the cultures and create a collection that walks the fine line between the two.
INSPIRATION
One of my main inspirations when it comes to menswear is Bianca Saunders as the way she depicts menswear through the lens of a black woman is incredibly unique, corning a market that was yet to be monopolised, establishing herself as a high fashion menswear designer.
Being of Jamaican and British descent I’ve been exposed to and embraced Jamaican culture at an early age; this meant I was also introduced to anti-gay rhetoric and idioms that were so normalised you didn’t realise the gravity of phrases such as “Battyman fi ded” and “chi-chi bwoy”. I wanted to use my collection to highlight the realities of the queer individual living in Jamaica compared to their British counterparts creating a line up that walked a fine line between the two cultures.
DETAIL
Many biracial individuals live in duality, understanding both their Black identity coupled with their White identity with some struggling the navigate the grey area of duality. It is with this collection I hope to highlight and showcase the beauty of duality.
