About Me

Hi, I’m Kyra, I’m a textile for fashion graduate from Northampton uni

Being a mum with a young child, has its ups and downs. I’ve struggled being a single parent which is why I returned back to university to finish my study’s and pursue a career in the textile industry.

My family is what drives me forward in my career. My life hasn’t always been great but I use them experiences to tell my story through my garments. I want to one day be able to create my own identity and footprint. But also to inspire many with my personal journey.

INSPIRATION

The vulnerability of my family

March 2020, my family was ripped apart. We were forced into lockdown. This meant that we had to lives in separate households, Our family unit was gone, no support network and no safety net, our lives had turn’t upside down over night. My partner and mother in-law were both known as extremely critically vulnerable and because of this we made our own rules. Sanitise parcels and food packaging, wash our hands, regular Covid tests and being careful when out and about. this experience inspired my FMP.

I began my research by looking at PPE that the NHS wore during the outbreak and also what they wore in Wuhan, China. I found that Tyvek is commonly used in PPE, as it is waterproof, lightweight and prevents you from viruses. The NHS is a big part of my inspiration to my final major project, which has informed my collection with colour, texture and shape.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Texture, colour and shape.

My collection of printed textiles is about reintroducing a sense of protection, positive emotions, and well-being through my use of pattern, colour and texture providing a tactile stimulation that can be both reassuring, soothing and comforting. The texture softness and warmth of textiles can evoke positive emotions and create a sense of security and relaxation. For example, soft and cosy blankets can provide a feeling of comfort and warmth. My colour and pattern use aims to create a sense of well-being by influencing mood and emotions, my colour mixing of blues and greens create a sense of calmness while the yellows and oranges create energy and excitement. Pinks are associated with love and compassion providing hope of new beginnings in a post pandemic world.
