About Me

Fashion Design Graduate from the Arts University of Bournemouth.

Lilian Kalman is a fashion designer from Budapest who specialises in womenswear. Her fond memories of playing dress up with her sisters inspired her to make an evening wear collection.

Through pursuing a degree in fashion design over the past 5 years, I have realized that my passion lies in creating bespoke occasion wear. During my childhood, I would dress myself and my sisters up in old dresses and costumes or make my Barbie dolls couture gowns out of tissue paper. This enthusiasm grew into adulthood as a passion for the craftsmanship behind elegant dresses and drapery. It is important to me to create beautiful things, I believe there is nothing more timeless than beauty. In an otherwise mundane world, it is vital to celebrate and embrace the creation of wonderful things.

INSPIRATION

To look like you just 'threw it on'.

The Empress Collection drew its inspiration from Empress Elisabeth of Hungary, who was regarded as a beauty icon during the 19th century. What captivated my interest in her story was her unwavering spirit of rebellion, challenging the norms at court, as well as her passion for travel. Her sanctuary from the constraints of court life was Palace Achilleion in Greece, where she embraced a more relaxed wardrobe and indulged in her hobbies, such as reading and horseback riding.

Sissi’s story of escapism has reminded me of my own life story and the times me and my family got away from the city of Budapest to Greece and Italy. My sisters and I enjoyed dressing up together in big chunks of fabric tied together with weird things such hair bands. I aimed to make dresses that looked like you just grabbed a big piece of fabric, threw it on and tied it up at the shoulder. This is an ode to my sisters and a promise that I will never forget to throw on a dress and explore the world.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

For my love of chiffon.

Initially, I began my draping process using plain white chiffon. Through experimentation and research, I ultimately decided to create my collection using metallic finish chiffon. This choice proved to be optimal for my collection, enhancing the appearance of the garments and transforming them into modern, playful pieces. Chiffon is frequently used for wedding and special occasion gowns, so I felt it was the appropriate material to support my collection. Chiffon's exceptional draping qualities seamlessly aligned with my vision, creating a fluid and effortless appearance on the body.
