About Me

I'm Lucy, a Fashion Photography graduate from Leeds Arts University

Lucy Haigh is a fashion and portrait photographer from the North of England. Exploring themes of girlhood, nostalgia and youth culture through her practice.

After taking up photography in school, it quickly became my biggest passion. I love capturing beautiful moments and making other people feel beautiful through my photography. I have always loved experimenting with fashion since being a young girl. Finding my personal style has always been a struggle of mine, however my graduate project has helped me to discover the kind of work I love. I created a project exploring themes of girlhood and nostalgia, which conveys an important message of the struggles and pressures young girls are facing through the difficult transition from girl to womanhood.

INSPIRATION

My initial inspiration came from wanting to create work that feels personal and relatable.

As a very nostalgic person, I love the idea of being reminiscent and so wanted to create work that captures this feeling. My project reflects upon a key part in a young girls life where she is navigating the shift from girl to womanhood. I would say looking through the lens of my younger self and my teenage sister, I was inspired to create work which explores the pressures young women are facing in this society.

I styled and shot multiple shoots using my sister and her friends as models, in their own bedrooms. This allowed for my project to have the personal and intimate feel I was hoping to create. The use of natural light added to this through creating a candid feel to my images. Since my project focuses on contradicting the pressures held over women from a very young age, such as growing up too fast, I styled my models in a way that felt very feminine and youthful to reiterate this point.

Pastel Dreams

The use of pastel shades and a purposeful disregard to beauty standards and makeup in my shoots was a huge part of communicating the importance of my theme. I also considered set design to an extent and the use of props as this helped to relay my conceptual ideas. In regard to set, I wanted to shoot quite authentically in the girls bedrooms so I included teddies or other items the models had lying around from their childhood. I used props as visual clues to help build my narrative, using things associated with childhood like teddies and hair bows, through to what would be more associated with teenage years such as the zit stickers and underwear. My intention through using the combination of these contrasting items was to relay the idea of what can feel like an overnight switch from girl to womanhood.
