About Me

Hey I’m Macauley! I’m from the University of Salford.

Macauley Searle is a fashion design graduate who specialises in Genderless fashion. His beliefs are that clothes do not have a gender, so why are we living in a society that puts pressure onto people just because of the clothes they wear.

After studying fashion design for many years, I have come to see that clothes are given a big stigma about who can wear what. Times are changing and society is becoming more accepting but I still feel as though we have to live by a strict regime when it comes to what we wear and if we step outside of that, we are met with judgment. Through my own personal experiences and experiences of my friends, I want to create clothes that truly have no gender so that we don’t have to live in a society where we are worried about what we wear.

INSPIRATION

My inspiration stems from discovering my own identity and my relationship with clothes.

In today’s society we have come so far in many ways when it comes to acceptance and diversity, but we have so much further yet to come. Looking at the relationship I have with clothes and how I see clothes, I wanted to channel that into my collection and bring that vision to life. To me, clothes do not have a gender and so why are we living in a society that has created this stigma.

Looking at architecture was a great insight into how the perspective on clothes has been morphed. To me, clothes are just there to serve a purpose, and that being a shell for people to be housed, the exact same purpose as buildings, but why are buildings not gendered the same as clothes? As a society we have this massive stigma around clothes being worn by a set group of people, and if we step outside that box we are met with judgment.

The camouflage

Camouflage is originally made for the disguising of military personnel so they can blend in with their surroundings. The choice to use that fabric fits pretty perfect within my concept, as you’re essentially hiding yourself in plain sight. For people to conform within society they have to hide exactly who they are on a day to day basis, because they have to fit in with their surroundings, the same reason for camo so the two link together almost perfectly.

I love creating clothes for everyone. I like to make my designs with meaning but also be as explorational as possible.
