I am a fashion designer who is focused on the craftmanship behind each garment and how I can make them to a high standard. Through developing my skills in tailoring, pattern cutting, and drape has given me a better understanding of construction and the development of shape. Always thinking of the wearer and how the garments make them feel as well as look.
My womenswear designs are not about making women feel pretty or delicate. There about making women feel strong and empowered. Through combining traditionally masculine shape with the female form and taking what I have learned about different fabrics and making techniques to integrate into my designs.
INSPIRATION
Reclaiming the original meaning of virago in creating a collection that combines masculine with feminine silhouettes that of tailoring and lingerie merged together to produce garments for a strong independent woman.
Craftsmanship plays a key role in the making of this collection through the continuous development of pattern cutting and drape and its role in the merging of masculine shape into my womenswear collection. Tailoring plays a significant role in the garments I make, taking time to add shape and structure of my work to the female silhouette. Using my sewing skills both machine and hand to produce garments that are made from designer dead stock fabrics to successfully make my collection.
DETAIL
Through using my skills in pattern cutting and drape to play around with proportion and shape. Such as having a garment that is traditionally masculine but fitting it to the female form and adding elements that are associated with lingerie like adding a girdle shape with suspenders or a tailored suit that has subtle accents of lingerie from hook and eye fastenings to fitted shirts that have paneling similar to a slip dress. In contrast I also took a 1930’s lingerie pattern and developed the pants into shorts that are more tailored.
