Throughout my work, I am interested in the transformation of materials, surfaces, and forms as a metaphor for the Self and the transformation of Identity as we grow through time. Processes of concealment and revealment underpin my thinking and I am inspired by the Surrealist movement's use of narrative and juxtaposition.
I design hand and digitally embroidered textiles using waste materials and collage approaches. The Textiles are rich in surface, color, and texture and each piece utilizes hundreds of upcycled fragments that combine to tell a unique and personal story.
INSPIRATION
Reclaim Worth is a collection of five dresses, which I made the textiles and worked into existing pre-loved garments. Each dress represents one of the stages in my life that I have identified below. The key stages are related to the experiences I had as a Gay man in what felt like a hostile world. The stages I identify are : 1. Arguing for strong masculine stereotypes, 2. The rejection from the church. 3. Crisis of identity. 4. Healing the Trauma 5. Self Acceptance and Self-Love
