As a menswear and print designer, concepts that hold significant integrity and substance are at the core of my design process; investigating subject matter that holds personal value guides my creative exploration, inspiring both my silhouettes and textile techniques.
I use harmonious colour ways and distinctive prints to narrate my concepts. My final outcomes are characterised by meticulous finishings and elevated hardware, along with articulated pattern cutting, emphasising the key elements of functionality and comfort. My designs fuse traditional textile techniques with modern technology creating a contemporary perspective on men’s fashion.
INSPIRATION
‘Home Route’ is an Autumn/Winter collection inspired by my grandparents’ uniquely contrasting pastimes: my grandfather’s passion for husky racing and my grandmother’s dedication to patchwork quilting. The collection draws initial garment and hardware inspiration from the durable, protective outerwear worn by my grandfather and traditional husky racers. The print and textile story aims to evoke a sense of home comfort and warmth, reminiscent of returning from a harsh, mountainous terrain.
This is achieved using intricate quilting techniques, reminiscent of my grandmother’s quilts, and cosy knitwear that provides both insulation and a tactile connection to home. The incorporation of oversized puffer sleeves and soft fabrics enhances the sensation of being wrapped up in a handcrafted quilt, blending functionality with a personal narrative.
DETAIL
With the textile applications for my garments deriving from reworked images of my grandmother’s quilts, digitally printed fabrics has become a central component in my design process. Throughout my design exploration, I have produced a range of samples which consist of my quilt design, digitally printed onto water repellent fabric, which have then been stitched into with a flatbed machine- creating a unique fabric texture which consistently appears throughout my collection. I am interested in exploring the juxtaposition of fusing traditional crafting methods like quilting and knitwear, with high-tech fabrics and innovative digital print technology- building a bridge between the past and future of textile design and craftsmanship.
