I am a creative and experimental womenswear designer, specialising in print design. I have an interested in and am intrigued with both nature and the female form. My design outcomes reflect my interests through the process of experimentation and exploration of different textures. I adopt a very hands on approach of working when generating initial ideas.
Throughout my four years at university, I have developed my observational illustration skills. This has allowed me to be able to visually communicate fabric movement and understand how clothing sits on and off the body. I find constantly expanding this skill, helps me to understand the workings of a garment and better my design ideas. Being a textural designer, I would describe my style as a very playful approach, especially when generating prints. Alongside observational paintings, I tend to experiment with mark making and stamp printing to elevate my prints to reflect my organic influences.
INSPIRATION
My biggest source of inspiration is nature. The idea of taking something organic, which is not necessarily ‘perfect’ and finding beauty within it, is something I find very intriguing. After spending time in the lake district, from a young age, my eye for texture and patterns developed. Being around nature, provides both peace and escapism. Since the start of university, I wanted to channel this into fashion in a way to bring this peaceful aroma into everyday life.
My fascination with the idea that all body types are perfect, irrespective of physical characteristics, directs my work. It is a personal response to body dysmorphia, that aims to create beautiful garments for all body types. I want my collections to challenge society’s idea of the perfect body, starting with my recent creation of a seies of abstract print designs that showcases a diverse group of women’s bodies. My goal is to design collections for women which allows then to demonstrate individuality.
DETAIL
The idea that all body types are perfect, can be seen through my final manufactured garments for my final collection, “Beautifully imperfect”. It is a transitional 2024 womenswear printed collection containing six looks that have been carefully designed with the aim to challenge society’s idea of the ‘perfect body’. Both garments in look one of the collection showcase repeat prints of the female body. These prints are made up from my observational drawings from in person and online life drawing classes. There has been a mixture of media used including, acrylic paint, watercolour and paint pens, to achieve a mixture of textures. My fabric story has been carefully chosen to reflect different skin textures. These include linen, polyester crepe and satins, that have a combination of smooth and shiny or rough and matt. The neutral colour pallet can be seen in the image and is made up from various skin colours and undertones, that were collected by makeup swatches around my university.
