Rakisha Hayre is a creative who combines her Punjabi heritage with contemporary influences.
While studying Fashion Design for three years, I was able to understand and figure out who I am as a designer. The older you get, the more you appreciate and connect with your cultural background. My aim is to celebrate this within all my designs.
INSPIRATION
Initially, I took inspiration from a previous third-year project which looked into my cultural background being a Punjabi. With this, I started to look at primary family imagery from home. From looking at family albums, I realized I was drawn to the images of my mum’s past work life. My mother made a lot of sacrifices for success in life because of marriage and this is something that should be celebrated for a south Asian woman.
South Asian women are not praised enough for what they go through for their own families and my mother has never once let something stop her from working for the life she deserves, even after moving to a whole new country and facing a language barrier on the way.
DETAIL
I have used dupatta trimmings as a key influence within my collection. Pushing the limits by experimenting many techniques to understand how they could work. From turning them into their own fabrics, to turning them into digital prints.
