About Me

Hello! I'm Sasandi, a fashion design graduate from Aod, Sri Lanka.

Sasandi is a sustainable fashion designer, studying fashion & textile design for the past 3 years. Her vision merges heritage crafts and sustainability, showcasing art through fashion to bring transparency to Sri Lankan artisans. She aims for sustainability without threatening the environment and in promoting slow fashion.

As a sustainable fashion and textile designer, I anchor my creations in environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. I merge heritage crafts with modern design, crafting pieces that pay homage to traditional artisans while championing eco-friendly methods. Transparency, sustainability, and reverence for artisans drives my ethos. Through repurposed materials and deadstock yarn, I minimize waste and showcase handcrafted textile beauty. My designs narrate tales, bridging past and present, embodying diversity, equality, and a pledge to sustainable fashion.

INSPIRATION

LOCAL ARTISANAL HERITAGE CRAFT MEETS CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, BUT MAKE IT SUSTAINABLE!

Inspired by the blend of local heritage crafts and modern design, my collection merges Dumbara handloom weaving and hand knitting with contemporary silhouettes. This fusion juxtaposes Western clothing with traditional tribal elements & detailing, creating a unique aesthetic. To be sustainable, I use deadstock yarn from local factories in weaving my fabrics and knitting my pieces from my collection; reducing waste, promoting slow fashion to highlight the artisans, ethical practices and global diversity.

I also draw silhouette inspiration from the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with Western silhouettes, juxtaposing tribal elements from traditional tribal clothing with modern details, championing diversity, where many cultures intertwine in curating the final collection. Integrating Dumbara weaving and hand-knitting from Sri Lankan artisans with Western styles, my designs unite cultures around the world, offering a fresh global perspective and showcasing the timeless allure of crafted artistry.

DETAIL

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CRAFTSMANSHIP AND SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION

In crafting my collection, I've embraced the heritage local crafts deeply ingrained in Sri Lanka's heritage fashion, including Dumbara hand-loom, hand-knitting, and crochet techniques. To promote sustainability, I re-purposed yarns discarded as dead-stock by local knit factories, unraveling and reusing them in making my Dumbara handloom fabrics as well as my knitted and crotchet pieces. Through Dumbara handloom weaving, I explored artistry with transitional shades, drawing inspiration from African woman's facial structures and traditional motifs. I also integrated hand-knitting and crochet, employing the same dead-stock yarn. I have also used 100% handwoven cotton handloom throughout my collection, keeping in mind of its durability and comfort to the wearer along with its biodegradability. In terms of silhouette, my collection harmoniously merges Western garment styles with traditional tribal elements, symbolizing a fusion of cultures that celebrates diversity and equality.

"Fashion is more than just garments; it's a canvas for cultural expression and environmental stewardship, weaving art, culture, and sustainability seamlessly." - Sasandi De Silva.
