Hello~ My name is EX&IN:JOY. I was created by ShaoChi Wu a fashion designer who is interested in pattern cutting and playing with colors. As a Taiwanese designer, ShaoChi wishes to introduce all the positive and downsides of her culture to the world as no culture is perfect and every culture is different.
My speciality is pattern cutting and color collocation. As both a designer and pattern maker, I have always worked on the details of the pattern and its similarity to the original design. My designs have always been including variety of colors either reflecting to my feeling or to the concept. I also like to question the frames in our life that are set as the norm and hoping to change the way of thinking limited by the so-called "tradition".
INSPIRATION
Growing up in a traditional Taiwanese family, I have always been troubled by whether I should be a good child for my family or can I truly be myself. As "obedience", which is equivalent to filial piety and respect for their elders, is normal and necessary for Taiwanese culture, I was always hiding my thoughts and my personality. There is always too many shoulds and can'ts in my mind that eventually feeling constrained became just normal.
EX&IN:JOY is my journey finding the way to escape from the frames my family and culture forced to put on me while making sure I don't linger too far from them. Check embroidery, which is used repeatedly in this collection, represents Taiwanese tradition and perfection in my parents' definition. The choice of green comes from the opposite of Taiwan's traditional red color. These elements are combined to show being myself is not abandoning my background, but to integrate yet not be confined.
