Sofia Angélica is a creative of Portuguese heritage who specialises in sustainable fashion design, garment construction and clo 3d pattern making. Her connection to nature and life itself is the core value of her work by celebrating natural fibers, ancient knowledge, community and sustainable practices.
By understanding how damaging and un-ethical the fashion industry is to our planet and to those involved in the supply chain , I committed on producing sustainable high-quality garments using natural fibers and materials that are ethical, biodegradable and organic. Recognising the complexity and time-consuming labour that goes into the craft provides us with a different view of our clothes. Clothes created with love and rooted in harmony with nature are far more than just commodities that can be easily discarded and replaced since we are connected to an artisan, a community, or a culture.
INSPIRATION
Trees embody the spirits of the land and carry the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors. These ancient beings live in communities and develop symbiotic connections with each other, collaborate in order to thrive and live in harmony and balance. Nature is the foundation of our existence and we are deeply connected to it, the same way we are all connected and intertwined with each other. When a tree sprouts from a seed, grows roots and branches out ever-expanding giving life to the next generations.
This very feeling of togetherness, community, sharing, connecting and weaving the world back to its true essence of creation is the message I wish to pass on by sharing the importance of remembering sustainable practices within fashion by reconnecting with Mother Nature and ourselves. The bond and respect I have with nature inspires me to design and make garments that are healthy for our bodies and environment, made from plant fiber fabrics such as cork leather, linen and hemp.
DETAIL
Twisting, Knotting and Draping originated from observing the roots and branches of trees and how they intertwine with each other, creating a beautiful tapestry around the tree trunk. Designs are also influenced by my Portuguese heritage and how my background has guided the choice of silhouettes, shapes and draping. Inspired by women, community and nature the style and cut of garments juxtapose between sharp and structural lines from tailoring and corsetry and the fluidity and drapery of dresses and skirts. Elegant cuts designed to flow and express the freedom of movement. Waist Twisted Panels, representing ancient trees wrapping around the womb. Tailored Cork Jackets with asymmetrical cuts just like nature is perfectly imperfect. Extracting the silhouettes of tree branches and roots and laser cutting them on to cork. Fraying the edges of fabric inspired by the gentle roots of plants, trees and mushrooms, representing the rawness and organic textures of these elements.
