Stephanie Oblitey is a Black-British designer specialising in unisex clothing who is passionate about artwork and its ability to be worn. She is a keen painter and illustrator and aims though experimentation with shape and decoration to turn any garment into a masterpiece.
Having always loved drawing and quickly finding a strong passion for fashion illustration in particular, my three years at university have really driven me to be able to transform anything I draw on paper into 3D, aiming to preserve the artistry on the page in the clothing I make. I love to experiment with shape and exaggerated silhouettes, I also really enjoy creating outfits that speak whatever the wearer is feeling.
INSPIRATION
When trying to decide which direction to take my final year project in, I thought to when I've been most inspired and excited, and that's when I'm either sewing or painting, so I said why not bring the two together? I'm especially drawn to the Renaissance and its portraiture - and with this movement and street wear culture sharing similar liberal ideologies which I resonate with, I chose to juxtapose the Renaissance's ornate but classic aesthetic with a streetwear 'canvas' to create a 'New Renaissance'.

DETAIL
In my collection, aside from the traditional painting, I wanted to showcase the artwork in an unconventional way. I experimented with several ideas before coming across my chosen technique, where depending on where the viewer stands, they see a different painting. In art and in fashion, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' idea, and anything can be interpreted in any way and so I wanted to somehow materialise this concept. I also wanted to recreate the sensation of 'unveiling' a masterpiece by creating something thar is 'revealed' as you walk by it.
