My designs are moving art, heavily conceptual, displaying the value of clothing and the visual art of fashion. Applying non-conventional materials and characteristics within my creative practices adds excitement to my pieces. The majority of my garments have been related to my adoption from Vietnam; the combination of internal and external identities.
Adoption is rarely a topic in fashion. Fashion should be an inclusive space creating representation for everyone. Within the pieces I often highlight personal feelings regarding my adoption from Vietnam. The value of conceptual art in avant-garde and Haute-Couture fashion designs has also been a significant influence. Demonstrating in-depth visual representation and mixed media within my design choice. The perception of lavish and often bizarre visual displays can cause controversy but I enjoy experimental aspects of fashion.
INSPIRATION
The collection Import/Export is a metaphor for the adoption process, comparing it to an exotic exported item; a light-hearted perspective to make this subject approachable for spectators. Imitating packaging used to transport the item/person, netting, cardboard, plastic bags, and barcodes, have been reimagined through heat manipulated acrylic to forms, and a variety of print techniques on materials such as Tyvek, tulle, and crystal organza.
Another influence is fruit packaging. I love the food in Vietnam, and I connected with the distinct flavours since I was a baby. The tropical fruits I have selected are unique to the region of Southeast Asia in colour and shape. Tropical fruit is a metaphor for my adoption. It references racial slurs like “coconut or banana”. Taking colour inspiration from them is my way of reforming these offensive terms into something vibrant and beautiful. I intended to represent these elements within my collection.
DETAIL
This is a short Video that supports my concept, personal journey and upbringing. The beginning part of the video you will see is the first moment I met my parents. These clips are extremely personal but this was a warming and happy moment that I am willing to share. I want “Memory Box” to be a commemoration of my adoption and I will be forever grateful for my unconventional upbringing.
