About Me

My name is Tara, and i am a Fashion Design and Marketing Student.

A graduate from the University of Derby. During my time studying, I have found that I have a passion for curation. I enjoy coming up with conceptual ideas focusing on Fashion and Fashion Marketing and bring these to life, whether in the form of Marketing campaigns, or building exhibition style spaces.

My main aim in creating is to express emotions, whilst using fashion as the medium. Fashion is a powerful tool for the exploration, representation and amplification of our identities without having to say anything. It also has the ability to drive change and create unity across the world.

INSPIRATION

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me...

The inspiration behind this project was based on my own experience with my natural type 4 hair. Growing up, I struggled with accepting, looking after and loving my hair, this is due to words that people used to describe my hair and the language I saw in the media. These negative words had an effect on my self esteem and how I felt toward myself.

To fit in to Eurocentric beauty standards, I started the process of chemically straightening my hair and wearing weaves, which was good at first but overtime my hair started to break off due to the damage, along with losing a sense of myself as I did not recognise or accept myself when I had my natural hair out. In this project, I wanted to express how the use of negative language made me feel, along with many other women of colour as found in my research.

DETAIL

A closer look...

I wanted to create something from braiding hair as a nod to the history and culture that comes with it. The process to braiding hair is a tradition, beautiful, delicate and time consuming one and I wanted to reflect this in my garment. I chose to do a corset as it is figure hugging and wanted to show the connection between hair and self.

To be beautiful means to be yourself in every way, shape or form...
