About Me

Im Tom, a BA Fashion graduate specialising in menswear

Tom Caleb Wilson is an Irish menswear designer specialising in normcore nostalgic silhouettes and textile print.

Growing up queer in Ireland led me to be uncomfortable with my masculinity for a long time, however through my work I now enjoy exploring the traditional idea of masculinity and how this can be reinterpreted. The kilt has been a token of sorts for me and represents so much of what I stand for as a designer, showcasing the transformative power of a garment to represent identity.

INSPIRATION

Tír na nÓg

Through my final collection i wanted to explore a nostalgic coming of age feeling represented through my own teenage years in ireland influenced by the protestant church, tight knit family dynamics and awkward high school memories, Combined with 2000s streetwear subcultures like saggers and bboys.

Pictured is my dads childhood bedroom, after being emptied out when my grandad died. A room he spent formative years in, and in turn took me to visit, with a mix of memories both good and bad. That feeling of nostalgia and youth is one i find endlessly inspiring.

DETAIL

Preserved In Plastic

I wanted to replicate the uncomfortable feeling of a new school uniform on the first day, leading me to an extensive textile exploration of shirting fabric trying to preserve creases. The final outcome being a large shirt and tie encased in plastic, with a distinctly awkward fit, clinging to the armpits and flaring out at one hip. This outcome has been the most satisfying for me and represents the way i work best, treating garments as a process rather than perfect final product.
