My interests in fashion design started when I studied textiles design in high school which led me to studying fashion design and textiles in college. This helped develop my knowledge of fashion and so I continued to pursue fashion design to improve everything I’ve learnt and also to explore the chances of working in the fashion industry. After studying Fashion Design for three years my skills in design and making evolved massively and I am very proud of how I got here and chose to further expand my ideas in fashion.
INSPIRATION
My initial inspiration comes from my own culture, I am used to developing ideas within my heritage such as my final major project which was inspired by The Mid Autumn Festival or The Moon Festival. I explored different aspects in this celebration and a combination of other objects, I enjoyed getting a better understand of my own culture but I am also very happy to have developed a different form of designing and making using these influences.
My knowledge in textiles continues to inspire me throughout my design processes and is which had led me to produce a vast amount of techniques and components in my outcomes. I have always wanted to represent my culture in a diverse and different way which is why choosing to study fashion design was a dream to me. Incorporating textiles when constructing garments drastically improved my way of designing and gave it a better recognition in shape and detail. I will continue to use it to my advantage.
DETAIL
For my final major project I based my collection on The Mid-Autumn festival which represents my culture and the different activities in this celebration. In my collection I have explored different shapes and objects within my designs such as Chinese paper lanterns which inspired my textiles techniques like circle pleats and fabric wadded lantern pieces. I was also aiming to create a collection that would not be too traditional so I did not lean too much towards the colour palette of the moon festival or my culture, which is why I went for a full gingham fabric collection as the textiles and shapes have already been influenced by my concept. I wanted my designs to be contemporary but conveys my idea in a traditional way but also gives the audience a diverse experience.
