About Me

Fashion transcends mere aesthetics, intertwining with the intangible.

My name is YIRAN WEI. I am a third-year student in Fashion Design at University of Southampton. For me fashion is a way that I can express my views on different things.

Music, with its rhythm, melody, and harmony, complements fashion's visual and tactile appeal, creating a multisensory tapestry that speaks to the soul. This synergy is not merely coincidental but is rooted in their shared ability to encapsulate and convey the nuances of human experience.

INSPIRATION

Resonance

This project visualise the feelings and emotions associated with specific moments through fashion. This project is inspired by an orchestral piece evoking my memory of adolescent. Piping as an important design detail in my project, highlighting the deep connection between music, fashion, and memory.

I started by looking into a very straightforward way of visualising the music, which is music notations. Kuhn (2000) recognised that memory is not a direct mirror of events, the understanding that memory does not provide unmediated access to the past.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

The past is continuously reconstructed through the sensory lenses of sound and style

This project has not only illuminated the symbiotic connections among these elements but has also underscored the profound depth of their collective impact on human consciousness and cultural expression. Through a journey that began with a single piece of music evoking vivid memories of school days, to the exploration of how these memories are intricately linked with fashion, this endeavour has revealed the multifaceted ways in which music and fashion serve as vessels for memory, each amplifying the other to create a richer, more textured recall of past experiences.

Feelings combined with memory and music are threads or ‘precisely cut components’ and ‘small individual moments’ (Benjamin 1999)
