About Me

HI I AM ZOE, A FASHION DESIGN GRADUATE FROM NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY

SPECIALISING IN WOMENSWEAR AND PATTERN CUTTING, MY CONTEMPORARY CRAFTSMANSHIP AND FASCINATION WITH DETAIL AND MATERIALITY ULTIMATELY INFLUENCES MY UNIQUE APPROACH TO DESIGNING. EMERGING MYSELF INTO EVERY ASPECT OF THE PROCESS, WHILST CHALLENGING MYSELF TO DESIGN NEW AND CONTEMPORARY GARMENTS.

FASCINATED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF GARMENTS, MY PROCESS BEGINS WITH THE PRELIMINARY CONCEPTUAL AND HISTORIC GARMENT RESEARCH. FABRICATING ANY INITIAL IDEAS THROUGH SAMPLING, INFLUENCING MANY OF THE UNIQUE FINISHINGS AND DESIGN DETAILS EXHIBITED THROUGH MY CONSTRUCTED LOOKS. EXPLORING VICTORIAN REFERENCES TO CREATE A COLLECTION WITH HISTORICAL INFLUENCES WHILST JUXTAPOSING MODERN FINISHINGS FOR A CONTEMPORARY TWIST.

INSPIRATION

"THE DOUBLE STEREOSCOPIC"

MY FINAL COLLECTION ‘DENTELLE’, A WOMENSWEAR A/W 2023 COLLECTION. EXPLORING THE NARRATIVE OF VICTORIAN STEREOSCOPIC PHOTOGRAPHER LADY CLEMENTINA HAWARDEN. IN 1859, HAWARDEN BEGAN TO PHOTOGRAPH HER DAUGHTERS, FIRST TAKING STEREOSCOPIC (CAPTURING TWO SLIGHTLY OFFSET PHOTOGRAPHS, KNOWN AS TWIN PRINTS). HAWARDEN USED MIRRORS TO REFLECT LIGHT AND EXPLORE THE IDEA OF ‘THE DOUBLE’. INFLUENCED BY THE HAWARDEN DAUGHTERS ‘DRESSING UP’ IN VICTORIAN GARMENTS, CONTEXTUALISED BY TRADITIONAL VICTORIAN HOME FURNISHINGS.

THIS COLLECTION INCORPORATES MOULAGED SILHOUETTES FABRICATED BY DRAPING CURTAINS OVER THE BODICE. IN COLLABORATION WITH GARMENTS RICH IN LAYERING AND GATHERING WITH INFLUENCES OF CONTRASTING FABRICS INCORPORATING HEAVY WEIGHT LEATHER, WATERPROOF NYLON, CREPE, GEORGETTE, AND LACE. PUSHING MY CONCEPTUAL RESEARCH AND THE BOUNDARIES OF VICTORIANA, FABRICATING NEW AND CONTEMPORARY GARMENTS BY JUXTAPOSING VICTORIANA WITH SPORTS DETAILS. CREATING THE IDEA OF “THE DOUBLE” IN AN UNEXPECTED STEREOSCOPIC COLLECTION.

JUXTAPOSING VICTORIAN WITH CONTEMPORARY SPORTSWEAR FINISHINGS...

… CREATING THE IDEA OF ‘THE DOUBLE’. USING CURTAIN TAPES INSPIRED BY THE 19TH CENTURY INTERIORS, FABRICATING THE GATHERED COLLAR OF LOOK FOUR BLOUSE. ATTACHING WIDE STEEL BONING MOLDED TO THE SILHOUETTE AND CONTOURS OF THE BODICE, HELD IN PLACE BY HEAVYWEIGHT BONDED NYLON TAPES WEIGHING DOWN THE CHIFFON BLOUSE. ULTIMATELY BLENDING HEAVYWEIGHT WITH LIGHTWEIGHT FABRICS TO CREATE A STEREOSCOPIC COLLECTION.

"IN ORDER TO CREATE NEW CONTEMPORARY FASHION IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME TO RESEARCH INTO PAST GARMENTS AND THE CONSTRUCTION METHODS"
